An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch dating to the early medieval / Anglo-Saxon period, c. AD 400-600. The brooch is in the form of a bird facing right with wings folded. The head and front legs of the bird are quite worn, and apart from being tinned or silvered, it has not other decoration. On the reverse of the brooch is the remains of the pin hinge lug and catchplate; there is a mass of iron corrosion from the now absent iron pin. Similar brooches have been recorded on this database including KENT-C0D077, IOW-1F2664 and BUC-0EC715.

According to MacGregor and Bolick (1993, 154) bird brooches are not common in Anglo-Saxon England, and even on the continent a more predatory form of bird is generally represented. A brooch in the Ashmolean from Fairford in Gloucestershire (MacGregor and Bolick 1993, 154, no. 22.1) and two from Chessel Down on the Isle of Wight (Arnold 1980, 57) are of similar form and design to this brooch.
