A fragment of a rotary quern, made from volcanic basalt lava probably imported from the Rhine area. The lower surface is pecked. The upper surafce is smoothed through use, although with numerous voids natural to the stone (up to c.15mm length). Outer edge slightly bevelled towards the underside. Mid grey.
The fragment is 225mm in length, 105mm wide, 55.3mm maximum thickness, 44mm minimum thickness and weighs 1510 grams.
Lava was imported to Britain for use as querns, from the Roman period to the Medieval period. The main sources for British querns are the lava stones from France and Germany (Freshwater, p.40).
