An elaborate medieval copper-alloy horse harness pendant. The pendant is lozenge shaped, and has an integral suspension loop at the top set at a right angle to the body. The background is enamelled. The upper left quarter contains reserve metal, into which are three oval motifs, each having three tapering 'spikes' extending from the base. The remaining three quarters contain five large pellets of reserve metal, and these appear to be randomly placed across a field of now light-brown coloured enamel. Overlaying all of this in the top half of the pendant is a large 'M' shaped motif of blue enamel. This motif might be a cadence (a horizontal bar from which descend vertical lines), used to indicate the 1st son.
Notes:
Arms: La Zouche.
Kevin Woodward kindly suggested that
'These arms look to be for the family of la Zouche of Harringworth Northamptonshire who held lands in Lincolnshire as well as many other counties. They were referred to in history as "of Harringworth" to distinguish them from the senior family branch, la Zouche of Leicester, [who] were cousins. The heraldic description will be 'Gules, ten bezants Or, a canton ermine, a label of three azure'. The label indicates that these arms were for the eldest living son of the current head of the family. In this case, it may belong to William la Zouche, second Baron Zouche of Harringworth, son of William la Zouche, first Baron Zouche of Harringworth (died 1352)'.
