A post-Medieval copper-alloy button.
The domed upper surface of the button's circular head is decorated with a punched flower head design. The central element of this design is a circular mask, the smiling face with two ring-and-dot eyes and an inner border of parallel dashes giving the appearance of sun-like rays. Four pointed-oval petals project outwards from the centre, and four smaller, pointed petals occupy the spaces between these. At the end of each of these triangular petals is a punched circle with internal flower head. The circumferential border comprises a series of punched arcs. The incomplete loop extends backwards from the centre of the head's underside, with which it forms a right-angle.
Diameter: 27mm; height/thickness: 6.1mm. Weight: 9.19g.
Buttons of this form date are thought to date from the 17th century (see Bailey 2004: 38).
