An incomplete copper alloy Roman straight-sided nail cleaner of Eckardt and Crummy 2008;Crummy Type 1a Crummy's Type 1a dating to the period c. AD 43 - 200. It measures 39.66mm in length, 4.46mm maximum width, 2.96mm minimum width, is 1.68mm maximum thickness, tapering to 0.64mm thick at the tip of the blade. It weighs 1.28g.
The nail cleaner comprises an incomplete suspension loop which terminates in two old breaks, below which is the handle which is decorated on both sides with an irregular pattern of incised grooves running along both long sides, creating a zig-zag ridge running up the handle. Below this the blade widens and tapers in thickness, splitting into two triangular projections at the tip. On one side of the blade there is an incised V-shaped groove running from the point at which the blade splits to just below the handle.
