A copper alloy Roman brooch, a trumpet derivative type dating from AD 43 - 200. The brooch has an integral headloop which is incomplete. The ings are rectangular and decorated with vertical grooves. They hide a tubular housing for the axis bar and hinged pin, which is missing. The upper bow is a slender trumpet which is sub-triangular in section. Instead of an acanthus button is a rectangular plate with a rounded transverse ridge across it. The sides of this are decorated with triangles of red enamel. The lower boe seems to be flat and rectangular in cross-section, but most of it is missing. The brooch has a dusty green patina. It is 34.2mm long, 15.9mm wide and 12.1mm thick. 6.79g. Compare number 989 on page 330 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue.
