A copper alloy probable annular brooch of medieval date, probable about AD 1200 - 1400. The brooch is incomplete with part of the frame missing, including the presumed constriction for the pin. The frame is oval in plan and rectangular in section. The front face is decorated with incised symbols, perhaps intended to be letters, but none are clearly identifiable as Roman or lombardic letters. It is perhaps an inscription rendered by an illiterate maker. If the inscription is in blackletter, the lines are outlineing letters rather than forming letters themselves, but the legend still appears to be blundered (Laura Burnett, pers comm.). The reverse is plain and the breaks are patinated. The patina is dark green to black, and where scratched, the metal is a bright brass or gold colour. The brooch is 54mm long, 51mm wide and 3.2mm thick. The frame is 9.7mm wide. 20.83g. There are several other examples of brooches with blundered inscriptions on the database, as well as Medieval brooches with inscriptions such as AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA, for example SWYOR-490007.
