An Iron Age Danebury Corded silver unit of the Belgae dating to c 50-40 BC. Obverse depicts Ex's (probably Exobnos) head facing left with corded hair and three large double rings in front joined by a corded line. Reverse depicts an annulate horse facing right with a curtain motif below and a spiral sun above. ABC 992 (Rudd, C, 2010, Ancient British Coins, Chris Rudd Aylsham 2010, Aylsham).
Notes:
"Ex- may be short for Exobnos 'daring, without fear' like the Gallic ruler Exobnos in the middle Loire valley, c 45-50 BC .. Whatever he was called, Ex- appears to be the only noble of the Hampshire Belgae that we partly know by name, with the possible exception of the putative Co- .. whose coins have been found alongside those of Ex- at Clanfield. Ex- probably lived in south-east Hampshrie, maybe somewhere between Petersfield and Portsmouth, and his rule (c50-40 BC or earlier) seems to overlap with the first years of Commios' reign. Ex-'s coins are among the earliest inscribed coins in Britain (see ABC 995)" (Rudd, C, 2010, ibid).
