Copper alloy bar ingot of uncertain date
The ingot is of consistent sub-rectangular form (with a length of 34.9mm, a maximum width of 16.9mm, a maximum thickness of 9.5mm and a weight of 31.2g). The ends are irregular but it is now unclear whether they have broken more recently. The upper face has been hammered with transverse lines forming grooves. The reverse face has a small number of weaker punched linear marks. The surface has a dark-brown patina with areas bright-green corrosion.
Notes:
The form can be broadly paralleled with bar ingots of Middle Bronze Age date, however analysis to ascertain the composition of the metal was attempted using X-ray fluorescence, the results are not semi-quantitative but indicate that the alloy is a leaded gunmetal and the presence of zinc indicates a date of Romano-British or later.
