Incomplete copper alloy hanging bowl mount. Part of the plate of the mount only remains. At the top is the sub of the suspension loop. The remaining upper part of the plate is crescent shaped. The front face is covered with deeply incised and moulded symmetrical decoration comprising (from the top) an incised rectangle with two ring and dot stamps set vertically inside, flanking this are two trapezoidal ridges (set on their sides), each with a ring and dot stamp inside. On the more complete side, there is then a series of raised chevrons forming a tapering herringbone pattern following the curve of the crescent. The decoration is contained by a framing ridge visible along the remaining edges. There are possible traces of degraded enamel in some of the recesses (particularly around the ring and dot decorations), but the colour is not identifiable. The rear of the mount is undecorated.
Date: Early-Medieval - 6th to 7th century
Dimensions: 31.1 mm x 40.4 mm x 5.4 mm
Weight: 10.73 g
Helen Geake has noted that this mount is similar to those seen on a hanging bowl from the Tranmer House Cemetery at Sutton Hoo (unpublished) (an image of which can be seen at http://gallery.nen.gov.uk/asset63514-.html) and that the herringbone decoration is also seen on mounts recorded on the PAS database in SUR-F4E237 and NMS-58F021.
