A fragment of a post-Medieval lead cloth seal of early 18th-century date (1702-1714).
The surviving disc with joining strips/tabs was probably part of a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. The disc bears a female bust facing left, that of Queen Anne (1702-1714) with the legend ANNA RE[ ]. The bust is surrounded by a border of short raised transverse lines. The rear face is plain.
Length: 20.7mm; width: 14.9mm; thickness: 1.6mm. Weight: 1.56g.
Contemporary cloth seals can be found illustrated in Egan 1994 (178; ref. 145ff.).
