A Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), Mackreth 2011, 5.a2. Plate 49, no. 1576. The incomplete copper alloy brooch has wings which are semi-cylindrical terminating with perforated wing caps, one of which is incomplete. The wings are undecorated. The iron axis bar and spring are incomplete, and the pin is missing. The bowhead is slightly hump-like in profile and decorated with a prominent, perforated lug and a high-relief V. The bow gradually tapers to the approximate mid point and becomes narrower on the lower portion before it is broken. The break was not recent. The surface of the brooch has a mid green coloured patina. It measures 26.69mm long, 18.24mm wide across the wings and weighs 5.35g.
Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120.
cf Mackreth 2011, Plate 49.
