Post medieval copper alloy sword guard of 18th century date

The guard is of fragmentary, represented by approximately half (with a surviving length of 40.2mm and a weight of 26.2g) and has broken through the central rectangular aperture. The guard was of concave double-oval form with a rectangular slot (14.6mm long) to accommodate the tang. Both faces are decorated with elaborate motif in cast relief. The motif on both faces depict a winged-figure in three-quarters profile, depicted with weapons in a radiating design, probably of mythical origin, possibly influenced by Assyrian or similar iconography. The surface is corroded with remnants of a pale-green patina and areas of stripped red-brown metal. The guard was likely to have been gilded but does not now survive.
