Probable Late Medieval copper alloy dagger, knife or sword chape, perhaps of 15th or 16th century

The chape is of sheet, two-piece form, with a soldered join, now detached and is near-complete (with a length of 31.8mm and a weight of 7.0g). The chape form is asymmetric, with a swelling near the base on one side (giving a maximum width of 23.0mm and where the chape has a maximum depth of 19.1mm). The other side is straight, before both sides converge to a pointed base. The mouth is oval and comparatively deep but slender (with dimensions of 16.7mm x 14.0mm) with a break on the more compete half. There is no applied decoration on the surface but linear striations from the finishing of the chape are discernible. The edges of the interior have the pale-grey solder evident, mostly above the base. The exterior surface is without patina with a bronze-colour, while the interior has a black corrosion.

The chape is of unusual form and does not easily fit into Ward-Perkins (1940) typology. The two-piece soldered sheet construction corresponds better with late medieval chapes, rather than later pommels, which would be cast but have some similarities in form.
