A copper alloy Roman finger ring.The ring is a roughly circular hoop of which most is missing to an old break.The remaining part is D shape in cross section, widening towards the bezel at the shoulders, one end of the remaining section of hoop has been folded inwards. The flat circular bezel steps up from the line of the shoulders at the ends. The bezel has recessed ares on the flat front which would have held enamel leaving a raised design of two circles flanking by V-shaped lines above and below, arranged with their points towards the centre all within a plain line unrecessed border. The shoulders are 7.7mm wide where they flank the bezel, narrowing to 3.0 mm at the furthest remaining section of the hoop. the remaining fragment is 20.1mm long. The ring is 3.3 mm thick at the hoop; the bezel is 12.8 mm by 12.9mm wide; the ring weighs 3.34 grams in total.
The ring is of Guiraud type 2a, Henig type II, such rings with enamel decoration on the bezel were very popular in the 2nd century and come in a wide range of geometric designs and enamel colours. See for example SOM-95D932, WILT-6739A6, DUR-5508F6 and SUR-675EB3 on this database.
