Post medieval lead/tin alloy cufflinks of 17th or 18th century date
There are three cufflinks represented by three separate studs, all missing the connecting links
A single cast stud is circular and flat (with a diameter of 15.7mm, a thickness of 1.6mm and a weight of 1.4g). The face has a raise border within which is a crown above two hearts. The rear of the stud has an integral, central pierced lug (giving a depth of 4.5mm) and a casting seam is evident flanking the loop. The disc faces are heavily-corroded and pale-grey.
The motif is thought to have originally commemorated the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1662 in loyal respect for the restored monarchy but became a long-lived symbol of marital affection.
The remaining two studs are both of cast octagonal form, one being slightly larger than the other (with maximum widths of 6.3mm and 5.1mm and with respective weights of 1.2g and 1.3g). The larger stud has a decorative incised border and no decoration is discernible on the other.
