SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SWYOR-DBE665

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Part of a silver seal-matrix. The matrix is circular and the face has a beaded border and background decoration of scrolling foliage. The central motif is a merchant's mark and described from the impression, it consists of the initials "AMB" ligated with a central staff extending upwards from the centre of the M. The staff is entwined with a letter "S" and at the top it descends on an angle to the left, forms a loop, then crosses the central line and terminates in a cross (+). Only the face of the matrix survives. On the reverse is a scar of broken metal suggesting that the handle was hollow and circular with the face perhaps soldered to it.

Diameter: 20.6mm

Thickness: 1.7mm

Weight: 3.77g

IOW-602EE7is a copper alloy seal matrix and has a similar style of merchant's mark and is of similar construction with a tubular handle (perhaps once holding a wooden shaft or handle) behind the matrix face.

Signet rings with this style of merchant's mark are also known, such as SWYOR-DB0A17 (2014 T348),which is fifteenth or sixteenth century in date.

Notes:

As this object is likely to be more than 300 years old and it is made of silver, it appears to meet the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act.
