Part of the base of a cast copper alloy spherical (crotal) bell. The piece is from one side of the sound slot with one straight complete side with part of thecircular terminals to the slot at the corners and patinated broken edges around the other sides. It has indented line decoration forming a double semi-circle by the slot with groups of three lines radiating out from it. At the ends the outer lines of each group join making the popular petal or sun burst patten. A further line runs along the edge of the slot. In the semi-circle is the maker mark, an initial C flanked by ring and dot. The fragment is 52.9mm by 31.9mm and 1.4mm thick and weighs 20.58 grams.
The Corr familiy ran the Aldbourne foundary from 1670-1742 and bells marked RC are thought to be made by them. Other 16th-17th century bells with the initials CL are known but the size and design suggests this is probably later 17th century - 18th century in date. SUSS-32E040 on this database is similar.
