A copper alloy Medieval seal matrix dating from about AD 1300 - 1500. The matrix is circular and the central motif is of two birds facing outwards but with their heads turned towards each other, drinking from a bowl on a tripod, or chalice between them. A spring of foliage fills the space between their heads. The legends reads: "+S' ROGER IN' BRISSTAL" meaning seal of Roger (perhaps) of Bristol. The reverse of the matrix is plain except for a raised rib across the back, at one end of which is a D shaped suspension lug and/or handle. The matrix is 26.8mm diameter, 8.2mm thick and 12.27g. It has a patchy light green patina. Compare BH-D8A560 and CAM-1AD386.
