Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete post medieval lead alloy whistle dating from AD 1700 - 1900. The whistle is cylindrical with a half cylindrical mouthpiece. Only the mouthpiece end of the whistle survives. There is a crescent-shaped sound hole at the point where the mouthpiece narrows. The cylindrical part of the tube is decorated with an abstract curvilinear design in relief lines. There are obvious casting seams along the sides of the tube. The rest of the whistle is missing so it is not known what form it took. Similar examples can be found on the PAS database: LON-8B61C5 and LON-61D493, and SUR-8574C1 in the form of a fish. The object is 20.3mm long, 8.5mm diameter and 2.61g. It has a smooth white patina.

Similar whistles were used as toys, or bosun's shistles, or hawking whistles.
