Roman (2nd to mid 3rd centuries) umbonate brooch: The copper alloy brooch is circular in plan an incomplete edge. The remaining edge has a slight lip with an integral knop which has a small perforation at the terminal. The reverse of this knop has two integral, perforated lugs which form the hinge of the brooch. The hinge has the corroded traces of an iron spring or pin. The body of the brooch is slightly domed in profile and decorated with a circular platform with four sub-trapezoidal petals around the edge. In the field which is low-relief there are traces of light blue glassy enamel. The brooch has traces of a mid grey/green patina which has patches of abrasion. It measures 27.86mm long, 20.31mm wide, 7.17mm thick and it weighs 4.09g.

Thistype of brooch is known as umbonate. Similar brooches were found in excavations at Richborough, Kent, and are illustrated and discussed by Bayley and Butcher (2004: fig. 99, cf. nos. 379-381; also p. 172-173) who comment these types of brooches were found across Roman Britain on civilian and military sites, but few are known on the continent. A date of ADc. 100-c. 250 is suggested for this brooch. A similar example can be found illustrated in Mackreth (2011, Pl. 109; no. 11588).
