Post medieval copper alloy cufflinks of 17th or early 18th century date
The cufflinks are complete and comprise two flanged-rim discs joined by a single copper alloy link (with a weight of 0.9g). The sheet discs are circular (with a diameter of 12.2mm and a thickness of 0.4mm) with an angled flange at the edge (giving a depth of 1.5mm). The fronts of both discs are decorated with a stamped motif of a crown above two hearts on a closely-spaced pelleted field. The rear of each disc has an integral, central pierced lug (giving a depth of 3.7mm) connected to a triple loop link of circular sectioned wire, soldered closed at one end. The disc faces are comparatively free from corrosion, while the rear has a grey-black patina.
The motif is thought to have originally commemorated the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1662 in loyal respect for the restored monarchy but became a long-lived symbol of marital affection.
