An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy Dorset type Colchester Derivative (T-shaped) brooch, with a damaged catchplate and missing its pin. The brooch is bent in half almost back on itself. There is a patch of iron staining below the chain-loop and around the pin-slot. It measures 37.5mm in (bent) length (originally c.72mm long) and weighs 10.30g.
The 23.2mm wide wings are tubular (max.4.5mm diameter) and undecorated. To the reverse, the pin-slot is 2.6mm wide. The iron staining (also visible at either end of the wings) is probably from the axis bar.
To the front the bow (11.6x2.2mm) extends at an 135° angle to the wings. The chain-loop above measures 11.38mm wide (with an internal diameter 6.5mm). The 'head' of the bow is square in shape and below this drops at a more vertical angle, although due to its present bent nature it is difficult to determine how vertical this is. It narrows from 11.2mm to 8.7mm and is decorated with two vertical ribs either side of a central gulley. A vertical line of rocker-arm decoration is visible to the other side of each rib.
The lower bow is undecorated and narrows from 7.5mm to 5.6mm, widening again to 5.6mm just above the foot, which is D-shaped and projects at 90°.
The catchplate has recent damage and a jagged edge, missing its entire curl. It extends for the length of the lower bow.
