Copper alloy sheet buckle plate of uncertain date, possibly Roman or Early Medieval. Only part of the front plate remains, the back is lost to old breaks. Of the front, the attachment end is probably nearly complete, with only one corner missing but this break extends down along one side and the adjacent corner and middle of the buckle end of the plate are also missing. The remaining section suggests the plate was rectangular with two or more tabs extending from the edge to loop over the strap bar of the buckle and continuing onto the back plate, one tab remains at the complete edge. The attachment edge is indented with many small notches cut into it. These notches are irregularly spaced giving the edge a ragged appearence but it is possible if the entire edge was presnt this would resolve into a pattern.
There is a rivet hole through the complete corner at the attachment end, this has been punched through from the front with a distinct burring left on the back. A semi-circular hole on the broken edge at the opposite corner lacks this burring so does not appear top be a similar rivet hole. The front has extensive remains of a white metal coating and lines of ring and dot along the three remaining edges and one ring and dot potentially in the middle. The remaining fragment is 25.3mm long, 25.0mm wide, and 0.5mm thick; excluding the burring on the back of th rivet hole; it weighs 1.56 grams.
The ragged edge and decoration on this buckle plate is very distinctive but has proved hard to parallel in the usual sources.
