STRAP END

A copper-alloy strap end of Early Medieval date of Thomas Class A Type 2. It is almost complete, just missing a small part at the split attachment end due to old breaks. It is flat and sub-oval in shape with straight sides that taper to a rounded terminal end. The terminal is zoomorphic in design, representing a mouse-like animal with two hemispeheres representing the nose, the two circular indentations above for eyes and two circles above for the ears. Behind the terminal is a rectangular panel decorated with a curved 's' shaped form possibly representing a sinuous snake-like creature. There are lines of pellets down both sides of this panel. Behind this, at the broken attachment end is a semi-circular panel with a circular hole in the centre of this which still contains the seperately made rivet. The reverse face of the strap end is flat and undecorated but at the zoomorphic end there is a ferrous corrosion product which appears to be attached due to the corrosion.
