A complete post medieval gold finger ring. The decoration on the outer surface oft he hoop consists of a Latin inscription: PRESERVACIO * LEGIS . EXECUCIO *REGIS., deeply cut in upper case script. The asterisks signify the position of five petalled flowers in the text. The wording is bordered either side by single lines and small vertical lines.
The inscription may be translated as "For the Preservation and (for the) Execution of the King's Law (or royal law)". If I was literally translating it would say "For the preservation and for the execution of the Law of the Royalty/King". Similar inscriptions have been used for the rings of serjeants-at-law (also sometimes spelled 'sergeants'); compare some listed by Oman (1974, 80).
Notes:
The diameter was originally entered in the Dimensions (below) as 1.52mm, which is clearly wrong. From the photographs, the actual diameter appears to be c. 22mm, so the diameter has been corrected to 21.52mm.
Inscription:
PRESERVACIO * LEGIS . EXECUCIO *REGIS .
