A complete Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead alloy bifaced token, dating from c. AD 1250-1800. Powell Types 3 and 14. The token is decorated on one side with simple intersecting lines creating segments; the other is decorated with a simple cross. The token is of a buff-white overall colour and measures 15.88 mm diameter, 1.69 mm thick and weighs 2.9 grams.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Therefore tokens with simple designs are thought to date to both the Medieval and Post Medieval periods and those with crosses also date to this wider period despite the idea that they were initially created to mimic long cross pennies.
