Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by a fragment of the head (with a surviving length of 26.1mm, a surviving depth of 14.9mm and a weight of 6.5g). The missing spring was secured between lateral, perforated lugs with the chord tensioned by the hook at the head. The head has been split across its width and only one of the wings survive (with a surviving width of 17.4mm). The surviving wing is semi-cylindrical with a rib on the terminal (7.1mm long, 7.9mm diameter and 8.5mm terminal diameter). The head has a curved side mouldings (giving the head a surviving width of 9.0mm) below a side groove. Further grooves converged either side of the hook at the head to form a double chevron. The one surviving side is straight for the short distance to the break and the upper bow appears to be of D-shaped section. The surface has a dark-green patina with areas of pale-green corrosion.
