Very worn Roman copper alloy plate brooch with central oval glass setting. Most of the outer border of the brooch is worn away but it is likely it was also oval. Th glass setting is matt black with a broadly flat front with has a slight rise twrds the cnetre, tapering side and probably flat back. The plat of the brooch is so worn that, as well as behind the glass setting, only small sections survive top and bottom, too small and worn to interperate the form or decoration of the border.
On the back is a small amount of the original white metal coated surfaceand a suggestion of a vertical catchplate at one end, now worn flat. At the other end is preserved a central, integral semi-circular lug with a central iercing though which runs the iron axis bar. One loop and the internal chord of the sprung copper alloy pin remains on this bar.
The entire piece is now 23.7mm long, 12.0 mm wide, 5.3mm thick excluding the lug and pin, 9.9mm including them and weighs 3.21 grams.
Bayley and Butcher (2004:178) suggest this type of oval brooch with a central coloured glass setting (Hull T271) dates to the third or fourth centuries and probably of British manufacture.
