FINGER RING

Unique ID: IOW-05DD43

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy finger ring (c. AD 43-200). Henig Type II.

The setting, lower part of the hoop and the sides of the bezel are missing. It has a horizontal bezel with an oval cell at the centre. The shoulders are 'D'-shaped in cross-section and taper evenly to breaks.

This finger-ring has a smooth matt green patina but the base of the cell is rough and corroded with areas of reddened metal. The breaks are old.

Length: 21.4mm; width: 8.4mm; thickness at bezel: 2.2mm. Weight: 1.39g.

A similar example is illustrated in the Colchester report (Crummy, N 1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust), 48-49, fig. 50, ref: 1786, which has an oval bezel. Johns (Johns, C. 1996 The Jewellery of Roman Britain UCL Press) illustrates similar finger rings, figure 3.1 describing them as being Henig type II rings which date to the 1st or 2nd centuries.
