A cast copper alloy vessel foot dating from the Medieval to the Post-Medieval period. The object is from a cooking vessel and has been broken across the leg. The object is L-shaped in profile. The leg rises above the foot where it terminates with an ancient break. A prominent midrib runs along the centre of the leg to the front.

The object has a mid-green patina and is worn. There are adhering traces of an unidentified black substance, which is probably a sooty/carbon deposit, on each surface of the object.

Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001: 52). Butler and Green (2003; 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. While certain specialist cast copper alloy vessels such as skillets remained in use later 'bronze cauldrons in general seem to have been superseded in the early years of the 18th century when their place was taken by cast-iron vessels which were cheaper to make and more durable to use.' (ibid: 22).
