HOARD

Unique ID: SF-8844BD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: Six fragments which are possibly part of a late Bronze Age hoard.

1: A cast mouth fragment of a probable socketed axe. The fragment is rectangular in shape and slightly curvilinear, with a moulding around the socket and a longitudinal casting seam.

Weight: 22.10g

Length: 34.39mm

Width: 25.14mm

Thickness: 4.91mm

2: Flat sub-rectangular fragment of plate scrap.

Weight: 14.34g

Length: 35.50mm

Width: 22.20mm

Thickness: 3.80mm

3: A casting jet or sprue, oval in shape with a flat rough upper face and a smoother lower face with a tapering sub-rectangular central projection.

Weight: 28.70g

Length: 34.61mm

Width: 20.81mm

Thickness: 23.95mm

4: A small rectangular flat fragment, too little survives to be sure what this fragment is but the patina is similar to the other objects listed above.

Weight: 5.17g

Length: 21.82mm

Width: 16.52mm

Thickness: 3.33mm

5: A small roughly rectangular shaped cast fragment with irregular surfaces, possibly Bronze Age in date.

Weight: 2.47g

Length: 18.74mm

Width: 10.28mm

Thickness: 5.74mm

6: A small roughly oval shaped cast fragment of possible Bronze Age date.

Weight: 1.17g

Length: 11.98mm

Width: 7.26mm

Thickness: 5.26mm

Discussion: These six fragments are probably part of a founder's or scrap hoard of late Bronze Age date. There is known to be at least one other such hoard in same and adjoining field (see 2012 T352 and 2013 T755). Therefore, this find is therefore from a site which has multiple hoards deposited on it, this is a rare occurrence in Britain.
