Terminal fragment of a post-medieval anthropomorphic copper alloy chafing dish support. The end of a curving rectangular-sectioned bar with a terminal, widened and slightly thicker, in the form of a grotesque hooded human head, with engraved details on both faces. Lower circular rivet or spindle hole blocked with iron corrosion. Extant length 32mm. Width 17mm, before break 10mm. 3mm thick. For related examples see KENT-31DC31 and WILT-21E836.
This support, along with the two others, would have extended from the upper edge of a chafing dish much like the figure on a prow of a ship. The dish would have been filled with charcoal and other vessels would have been placed over it, resting on the three supports, so that food could be kept warm. This support is from a chafing dish of Lewis's Type F2, which he dates to c.1575-1650 (Lewis, J.M 1973, Antiquaries Journal 53,1, 59-70 'Some types of metal chafing dish').
Notes:
Note that a reference to these objects in Read, B. History Beneath Our Feet. 1995. 164, 1096 stating they are possible 17th C toys or crossbow tensioners is erroneous.
