An incomplete lead or lead alloy bifaced token of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 to AD 1800).
The token is sub oval. The obverse depicts a long cross with one pellet in each quarter (Powell type 12 and 14), similar in style to that of Edwardian pennies. The reverse is decorated with five raised pellets, four make up a square with another creating a point, there is a horizontal line through the square.
The token has a diameter of 23.2 mm and is 3.5 mm thick. It weighs 5.1 g.
The token is a mid grey in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail and some damage.
Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods.
