Part of a Roman spoon, made from copper alloy.
The top of the stem has been lost in antiquity, and much of the bowl is also missing. The upper third of the surviving portion of the stem is of oval cross-section; the lower two thirds are of rectangular section, tapering at the bowl end, where there is a downward step with U-shaped notch in its upper surface. The remnant of the bowl extends forwards from this step. Traces of silvering or tinning survive across much of the surviving piece.
Length: 43.7mm; width: 9.5mm; height: 8.5mm. Weight: 3.39g.
As the dating of Roman spoons is usually based on the shape of the bowl (see De La Bédoyère 1989: 102), precise dating of this piece is not currently possible.
