HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: BH-345904

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy hooked tag, probably dating from the early post-Medieval period.

The plate takes the form of an openwork 'knot' with three loops. The surmounting hanger has a hemispherical moulding on each of its two inward-angling sides, and a horizontal top bar with offset central area. The rearward hook is of triangular cross section and tapers to a sharp point.

Length: 35.1mm; width: 20.3mm; thickness: 2.1mm. Weight: 2.72g.

Parallels for this piece include PAS records BH-B3BCE6 (from Battlesden, Bedfordshire) and BH-7E99D1 (Lathbury, Buckinghamshire). Similar artefacts are also illustrated by Read (2008: 110, nos. 436 - 440). It has been suggested that some forms of hooked tag may date from as early as the late 15th century (see Egan 2005: 43 - 44), although the main period of production was probably the 16th century.
