Roman copper alloy bow brooch of enamelled T-shaped type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, catch-plate, chain-loop and foot (with a surviving length of 45.3mm, a surviving depth of 15.1mm and a weight of 7.92g). The missing pin was hinged within tubular wings, now truncated (with a surviving width of 17.2mm) and with a ferrous axis bar, which is still present. No decoration survives on the wings. The stub from an integral chain-loop is present at the head. The upper bow is of rectangular section (10.8mm wide and 3.0mm thick), with straight sides which were near-parallel or slightly convergent. Towards the mid-bow. The panel has a raised central panel decorated with opposing enamelled cells now mostly empty but originally containing blue (left) and yellow (right) enamel. The mid-bow was decorated with a raised pellet (5.5mm diameter and 1mm high) with a central indentation, which may have held enamel. The leg is of D-shaped section with straight sides converging to the break, above the missing foot. There appears to have been a knurled midrib and transverse moulding at the base of the leg. The catch-plate is positioned to one side of the rear and is missing the catch. The surface is heavily-corroded with remnants of a green-brown patina.
