Roman copper alloy  brooch of Colchester derivative, Harlow spring System of 1st century AD date.
The brooch is incomplete, missing the leg and foot (with a surviving length of 30.3mm, a surviving depth of 14.8mm and a weight of 10.4g). The incomplete spring remains in place around a copper alloy axis bar and is secured with a central, perforated lug and the chord tensioned with a lug at the head. The wings are truncated and are concave across their height (with a length of 23.5mm and a height of 6.4mm). The wings were enhanced with vertical grooves near the terminals, now corroded and worn. The upper bow is of rounded D-shaped section, with straight sides converging to the break (with a width of 7.0mm and a thickness of 7.9mm). The lug at the head continues as a short rib but no other decoration is evident on the bow. The bow appears to be getting deeper at the break, probably to incorporate the missing catch-plate. The surface is heavily-pitted with a dark-brown patina.

Class: Colchester derivative, Harlow spring System
Sub class: Mackreth (2011), CD Ha
