Group of 24 flints.
1-3: Three very large flakes, one of levellois type with the beginnings of limey type patination, especially on the dorsal face. The second is a squat flake core made utilising the flake and the third is a large irregular flake which also has a limey buidup. The first could be late neolithic and the latter two post-medieval in date.
4: A squat flake, heavily patinated pale blue-grey, probably prehistoric in date.
5: Crude irregular and thick flake with squat flake scars.
6-13: Eight long flakes. Hard hammer struck and quite chuncky. One at least with limited edge retouch, probably post-medieval in date.
14-24: Eleven snapped flakes and blades, some with limited edge retouch. Two with cortex on one edge, three with platform but the rest with a single 'spine' on the dorsal face. probably post-medieval in date.
This is an unusual group. There may be a mixture of material from different periods, i.e. no 1 and 4 look earlier than the rest. In view of the hard hammer striking and the chunky nature of the flaking the assemblage has the appearance pf gunflint production waste. However, it lacks the snapped bulbar platforms which are common with platform type gunflints (from c1800) suggesting that these might be by-products of an earlier wedge-form industry and therefore important in the Brandon region.
