Denomination: Cut halfpenny
Ruler/issuer: John of England
Mint or issue place: Canterbury
Category: English coin short and long cross period 1180 - 1278
Obverse description: Only one side-curl of the portrait visible, because the obverse die has been heavily off-struck, leaving a substantial blank area on the obverse. Inscription, ring and beaded margent. Nonetheless the cut is approximately vertical through the obverse and the dexter half is present.
Obverse inscription: ]Ex HEN[
NB the 'x', which appears immediately after the E and just below the trefoil of the sceptre, is very small and neat.
Reverse description: Four linked pellets in each quadrant. On this face centrally struck, and cut vertically through the initial mintmark, keeping the dexter half of the design. See obverse description: the die axis is therefore 180 degrees.
Reverse inscription: ]D.ON.CA+[
The D has a thick fore-edge and long trailing serifs. The 'O' of ON is very thick-sided. The C of CA appears to have serifs but to be open. The A is firmly barred and with serifs.
