A small body sherd of wheel-thrown Mancetter-Hartshill mortaria (36mm x 22.5mm; thickness: 9mm; weight: 12.59g). A fine-textured and powdery fabric with an off-white colour. There are fine quartz inclusions in the fill with black and yellow trituration grits and iron inclusions on the inner surface of the sherd. The grit is not very worn, possibly indicating that it may not have seen much use.
Mancetter and Hartshill mortaria has a strong concentration on the Warwickshire/ Leicestershire border, where many kilns have been recorded and excavated. Its distribution is extensive in the Midlands and the north and is dated from the mid 2nd-early 4th century (Tyers, 1996, 123).
