MOUNT

Unique ID: WILT-14DFB3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval copper alloy mount inscribed IhC within an incised border flanking the outside edge of the mount.

The mount is basically square in shape with two neighbouring corners rounded (those below the inscription) giving it a vague 'shield shape'. There is a rivet hole c.1mm in diameter above the I and C, and one at the base of the h.

The reverse of the mount is flat, but it has bent in several places and ?straightened to give it an uneven appearance. The inscribed face appears to have patches of diagonal tooling marks, each patch being in the same direction but different patches face in different directions. Is this possibly decoration, or keying?

The patina is light bluey green and it measurements are 34x33x0.5mm. It weighs 6.06g

IhC is a variant of IhS, the first three letters of Jesus.
