Incomplete copper alloy lozenge-shaped plate brooch of Roman date, probably second century AD. Length 23.5mm, width 24mm and 1.5mm thick. Weight 2.51

This appears to be a simplified form of the more usual highly stepped type of enamelled brooch with corner lugs. Viewed from the front the left hand side lug and also the lower side lug are broken and missing. The two surviving lugs which are roughly circular in outline have a crudely executed concentric moulded circle inside which is a small circular indentation. A central lozenge-shaped panel which is 14mm in height and width is only very slightly raised from the base plate. Between the central panel and the outside edges of the brooch is a field of regular width. This field, the central panel and the circular indentations on the side lugs were probably filled with enamel. However, no enamel has survived. The rear of the brooch is flat. At the top, just below the upper corner lug is a pair of perforated lugs for a hinged pin which is now missing. The lugs had semi-circular ends although the end of one lug is broken and missing. A small amount of iron corrosion appears to be situated within the surviving perforation, suggesting that the hinge bar was made of iron rather than copper alloy. The brooch is very worn and a regular mid-green coloured patina survives on both surfaces.
