A Medieval copper-alloy single loop buckle dating from about AD 1270 - 1350. The cast copper alloy frame is distorted but was sub-oval in plan with a narrowed off-set bar. The outer edge is swollen and the sides are convex in plan. The pin is almost entirely missing.

The buckle plate is sub-rectangular and tapers from the frame. It is folded round the bar. There is a slot for the pin and recessed corners. The plates are joined by a rievt int he centre at the attachment end. This rivet runs through the back plate and then is crudely flattened. The original patina is missing and no decoration is visible.

This buckle does not fit into the Meols typology, but numerous other examples have been recorded on the PAS database. IOW-364577 cites a published parallel: "This buckle is similar to one recovered from archaeological excavations in Swan Lane, Upper Thames Street, London and has been dated c. AD 1270 - c. AD 1350 (Egan & Pritchard 1991: 76, fig. 46, ref: 316). Compare also SOM-3C20C4 and NMS-5BCFC7.

The buckle and frame are 39.8mm long, 20.3mm wide and 8mm thick. 7.67g.

Class: thick outer edge
