Roman copper alloy bow brooch Polden Hill variant / T-shaped type and of late 1st to early 2nd century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing the leg and pin (with a surviving length of 31.9mm, a surviving depth of 15.7mm and a weight of 15.2g). The brooch has a hinged pin within tubular wings (with a width of 20.8mm and 7.0mm x 6.2mm section) and a copper alloy axis bar. The rear of the wings are stepped at the base and top, resembling an enclosed spring. The wing terminal have expanded flanges (8.6mm diameter). There is no applied decoration discernible on the wings. The upper bow is of D-shaped section, with curved stepped moulding at the head (with a width of 10.1mm and a thickness of 8.4mm). Beneath the head the bow is enhanced with side flanges, which are straight and convergent as far as the break. There is no applied decoration on the upper bow. File-striations are evident running along the bow adjacent to the side flanges. The surface is pitted with a glossy dark-green patina and patches of bright-green corrosion.
The brooch has a number of the attributes typical of the Polden Hill type brooch, such as the side flanges on the bow and wings but is unusual in being hinged, rather than sprung.
