A complete copper alloy buckle of medieval date. The buckle is zoomorphic in nature comprising a hollow tubular animal head with a gaping mouth and integral flat rectangular strap bar extending from the back of the "head" of the beast.
The beasts head is sub-ovate in section with moulded decoration of transverse lines representing the brow and snout. A prominent knop placed centrally on the "mouth" end represents the nose. Hatching between these two areas may represent the fur of the animal. Te outer edge of the strap bar is decorated with incised lines and the base is undecorated.
The metal has a mid green patina and survives in fair condition. The buckle is 37.8mm long, 18.4mm wide, 2.9mm thick and the head is 14.3mm high.
Numerous similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database, for examples see: LIN-3D61B5, SWYOR-B57064, NMS-3D5AA5, ESS-407791 and SF-E1A115 which details an article on such buckles in which they are described as being Romanesque in appearance and so a suggested 12th-century date is given.
