Medieval copper alloy oval buckle with separate plate, probably of mid-14th to 16th century date
The buckle comprises the oval frame (24.2mm long and 27.1mm wide) with separate folded sheet plate (33.3mm long, 15.8mm wide and 1.4mm thick). The buckle has an expanded outside edge (5.5mm wide and 4.5mm thick), which in convex (8.6mm deep) and has a notch for the pin. The sides are also convex and the bar is offset and narrowed. The pin does not survive but the presence of iron corrosion suggests an iron pin was used. The plate is folded around the bar (7.6mm deep) with a slot for the pin. The plate is of rectangular form with the underside part of the plate slightly smaller. The plate was attached to the strap and closed by a rivet near the attachment end, which is still in place (with a length of 7.0mm and a head diameter on the rear of 4.5mm) but not noticeable on the front plate. The surface of both the frame and plate is very-heavily corroded and pitted with dark-green to brown corrosion and no trace of applied decoration survives.
