A complete post-Medieval lead token of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), issued at London, c. 1590-c. 1603. (North 2063; Mitchiner 4738ff.; Powell type 25).

Obverse: DYE SOLA PHENIX; Phoenix in flames below crown

Reverse: Possibly BEATY REGINA; Crowned rose. E R at sides

Diameter: 20.6mm. Weight: 3.06g.

North (1991, 140) notes that such pieces were probably medalets or counters rather than tokens as some appear to relate to Mary, Queen of Scots. These rare pieces are normally found in London, and were thought to be struck about 1574; Mitchiner (1988, 1653) has since revised the dates of the 'GOD SAVE' reverse to c. 1590 - c. 1603 AD. Further examples can be also found illustrated in Fletcher (2003, 49).
