The complete circular bowl of a late medieval or 16th century sheet metal skimmer, 205mm in diameter. The implement is made of sheet copper alloy and is slightly concave. The edges have been folded in on the concave side to provide extra strength. The skimmer is pierced by 76 holes arranged very roughly concentrically. Two holes retain rivets for the missing sheet metal socket which was fixed to the convex side. The missing handle was presumably of wood. The outline of the socket is visible and eight of the holes appear to have been intended to retain it. The two surviving rivets are both of sheet metal construction which suggests a date no earlier than the mid-15th century.

Notes:

The finding of a complete skimmer bowl, particularly one of this size, is very unusual.
