A lead alloy probable vessel escutcheon filling / adhesive dating to the Roman period. The object is tear-drop shaped in plan with a flat face and curved reverse. There are several similar items recorded on this database that shows how these were encased by a copper alloy escutcheon, and presumably acted as an adhesive to attached the escutcheon to a lerger vessel, See for example DUR-838BB5, YORYM-67F775, GLO-166FE4 and BERK-873B70. There are several tear-droped shaped lead objects that have been recorded as medieval or post-medieval weights, but without the additional copper alloy casing. It would appear therefore that objects of this size and shape are actually Roman vessel escutcheon fills rather than later weights.
